Y-your birthday is coming up too?
no subject
Her ears straighten up very abruptly. ]
W-well- yeah! I said that, didn't I say that, it just- it doesn't count, it's like yours!
no subject
[Basil shakes his head a little as he sits up to face her, his claws balled up into fists in front of him.]
I-I'd still like to know when it is...so I can wish you a happy birthday. Even if you don't count it...or do anything for it.
[It's funny, even though they've talked about how weird it is to have their birthdays overlap in Ryslig like this, here Basil is still wanting to acknowledge Max's. Her's matters.]
no subject
It's the 27th, alright? Almost at the end of the month.
no subject
[Better. He had no idea their birthdays were that close...]
So then...next year we'll count our birthdays.
[He isn't trying to think too hard about what that means- next year- and is just saying it for what it is.]
You'll be sixteen, and I'll be seventeen.
no subject
Yeah... I might not even be aging anymore, though. [ Icy, icy cold. ] A girl here... She was one of what I became when she was seven and just...didn't grow.
[ ...Okay. That may be weighing on her a bit. ]
So who knows, maybe I'll have a Happy-Still-Fifteen party.
no subject
But Basil shakes his head a little anyway. He doesn't want to believe that, or think about it that way.]
You're growing up on the inside, though. No matter what kind of monster you are. That...I don't think the Fog God can take that away from you.
no subject
The alternative—letting it overtake her, pull her down so far she can't stand back up—frightens her. She thinks it's the only one, but... ]
...Now who's being cheesy? [ It's murmured. No disparaging tone, just matter-of-fact. ] Thanks, Basil. Really.
no subject
And given how it's so easy to be negative here, and trap yourself in a never-ending loop of it...well. Let's just say it's easier for Basil to show optimism towards someone else's plight than it is towards his own.]
You're welcome.
[He swings his legs over the edge of the steps a little, leaning forward with his hands braced against either side of himself.]
I guess...maybe it's too early to think about that kind of stuff anyway. We can worry about that when we're actually monsters, for real.
[Because for Basil, it's not "real" yet, at least not in the same physical way that it is for some. The fire was real, and his claws and scaled are too...but he gets the sinking feeling this is just the tip of the iceberg of what's to come.]
no subject
She doesn't say that she's been struggling with the definition of the word monster for quite some time. That from some perspectives—i thought you were getting better but you aren't are you—from some, she was already one.
Max looks out at the sunset with a distant expression. None of that would help. None of it. So she doesn't say it, instead choosing to live in the happier thoughts. The moments of reassurance. Maybe that'll work some day. ]
Yeah. [ Voice even. ] Find that happy medium, remember?
no subject
It's doable. That's what matters here.
Basil falls silent for a little while after that, mostly just...watching the sun set. It's almost gone completely down, which makes Basil feel melancholy in a way he hasn't before. There's a reason for it, of course.]
You know...I won't be able to go outside during the day anymore, pretty soon.
[Well, he says "soon", but he's not sure when exactly. It could be tomorrow, could be months from now.]
The guide says that...Gargoyles turn into stone when they're in the sun.
[Which is terrifying. But even more than that...it means he's going to be cut off from the one thing he had actual plans to do here: garden.]
no subject
That bitch. [ Mouth moving faster than her brain, as usual. She curtails the anger, quickly. ] That's- I'm sorry. I know that can't be...easy.
[ And, after a moment: ]
Me neither, really. I mean, I can still go out, but... The sunlight's gonna do a real number on my eyes. I can only really see well when it's night.
[ And even then, it's iffy. But she's not going to say that. ]
no subject
I think, maybe it's probably because...monsters are scarier at night. In the shadows, or something...maybe.
[That's how he sees it anyway, but he's a known not-liker-of-dark. Which has oddly changed somewhat, ever since he started finding himself compelled to dig holes.]
I'm more...worried about the stone part than not being able to go out.
no subject
That scowl vanishes, however, after. ]
...Oh. [ There's a moment where she tries to think of a solution. Is it just the sun hitting his skin? What if he covers up?
She chews on her frostbitten lip, halting that. She knows she always hated when Lucas tried to...find solutions, because there weren't any. This might be like that. So, Max starts again. ]
Sorry. I... Yeah. That's fucking terrifying. [ No admissions otherwise. ]
no subject
The unknown.]
Mmhm... [He agrees with her quietly, pulling his knees to his chest. He doesn't want to bring the mood down into something too dour though, so he opts to keep going.] But...I think it'll be okay. I mean I've...I've seen some scary things, and I've hurt a lot already. It can't be any worse, compared to all of that.
[Basil says, not knowing that he is going to explode soon]
no subject
And- you know, I think mine're...done, so. If you need anything, you know... I'm just down the hall. A holler away.
no subject
I will. I just hope I don't do something like almost burn my room down again...
no subject
You got those mitten-things, it should be...less bad, at least.
[ Max is not good at the optimism thing but god does she try. ]
no subject
[Listen ANY optimism is better than nothing. Basil appreciates it.]
Though, when Mr. Rosso was helping me calm down that day...I found out I can breathe fire too.
[So. You know.]
no subject
Oookay, so we're going full dragon, then.
no subject
[In fact, NO heat hurts him anymore. It's like he's just...immune. Which is a plus, considering.]
I kindof wish I could have turned into a Nymph or something instead...at least that I could have understood.
no subject
Oh, but you can't have that, something you might be a little more equipped to handle. [ Ah, the patented Max deadpan. She punctuates it with a roll of her eyes and a snort. ] Instead you just get flowers in your hair when the local witch misinterprets what you ask.
[ Ah. Wait— ] You- told me about that, on one of the... I posted something on the network, it's gone now.
no subject
[It also means he missed the conversation about school, and going to the bus stop with Max sometime, but...that's all stuff that can be revisted, at least. Easy stuff.]
But yeah, I...I guess that would be asking for too much. For things to be easier.
no subject
She taps her hoof on the porch stairs—the whole thing, not just the front or back. ]
...Enough with all the monster talk right now. [ It's a little heavy, but event. ] Have you thought of something? That you wanna do to, like...acknowledge your birthday.
no subject
Basil thinks. He really sits and thinks for a long moment, looking ahead. What would he want to do...? He could say any number of predictable things, like spend the day gardening, or dig a ton of holes, or go looking for rocks......]
...a picnic.
[Or...]
I...want to have a picnic, somewhere. Somewhere nice.
